PicoStream was developed from more than 15 years’ experience designing, installing and maintaining hydropower systems. It was created to make small-scale hydropower viable for sites where conventional schemes are too expensive, disruptive or complex.
Always-on renewable power
Where site conditions are suitable, PicoStream can generate electricity day and night from existing water flows.
Designed with fish safety and river ecology in mind
Unlike traditional hydropower schemes, PicoStream does not require dams, abstraction or impoundment. The turbine is designed to sit directly in the flow, helping reduce disruption to the river environment while generating renewable electricity from moving water.
Built for practical deployment
The turbine is made from high-density recyclable polymer and designed to be modular, durable and cost-effective.
Simpler installation
PicoStream is designed for rapid deployment, with no dams, no major civil works and minimal disruption to the site.
The turbine can be anchored in place without the need for a large construction project. This makes it a practical option for sites where conventional hydropower would be too expensive, slow or complex.
Avoids traditional hydropower licensing
Traditional hydropower schemes require Environment Agency licences that take years and add significant upfront costs.
Because PicoStream does not abstract, impound or transfer water, the Environment Agency has confirmed that these traditional hydropower licences are not required.
A simpler FRAP permit may still be needed depending on the site, which we handle as part of the project.
